Pergola builder in Fort Collins CO
A pergola is posts, beams and an open roof of rafters. It frames a patio or deck, gives filtered shade, and carries lights, a fan or climbing plants, without the cost and weight of a solid roof.
Wood is the usual choice. Western red cedar and treated timber both work; cedar weathers to silver if left alone and holds a stain well. Colorado's dry air and strong sun check and split wood that isn't sealed, so a finish goes on after the pergola is built and gets renewed every year or two.
Freestanding or attached
A freestanding pergola stands on four or more posts of its own, which keeps it clear of the house and its roof. The City recommends cross bracing on freestanding pergolas to keep them from racking in wind. An attached pergola hangs one side on a ledger bolted to the house, which means a permit at any size in Fort Collins, and an engineer if the ledger would go on a roof overhang, rafter tails, or brick or stone veneer.

Fort Collins pergola rules
The City's Residential Pergola Guide (revised March 30, 2026) sets four permit triggers: attached to a house or structure, taller than 8 feet at any point, over 120 square feet, or closer than 3 feet to a lot line. The engineer triggers are a pergola on top of a deck, a beam on hangers, a ledger on an overhang or rafter tails, attachment to veneer, materials not addressed in code (the guide names composite and aluminum), and any pergola over 12 feet tall. Lattice on top needs at least 3 inches between members.
All of it, with the patio cover rules that run alongside, is in the Fort Collins pergola permit guide, or straight from the City's Residential Pergola Guide.

How a pergola gets built
- 1Place it for the sun
Rafters running east to west cast the most shade at midday; turning them, or adding slats on top, shades the low west sun.
- 2Freestanding or attached
A freestanding pergola needs cross bracing or posts embedded in concrete. An attached one needs a ledger on solid framing, not on the roof overhang or veneer.
- 3Permit when it's over the limits
Attached, over 8 feet tall, over 120 sq ft or within 3 feet of a lot line means a Fort Collins permit; on a deck, aluminum or over 12 feet means an engineer too.
- 4Footings and posts
Pier holes are dug, inspected open where a permit applies, and poured; posts stand on manufactured bases.
- 5Beams, rafters, finish
Beams, rafters and any top slats go on with the connections the City wants to see, then the wood is sealed or stained.
Pergolas with decks
Pergolas are often built with a new cedar deck so the posts can run down to their own footings. See the deck builder in Fort Collins page for the rest.
