What changes a pergola's price
Wood species
Angi lists cedar at $25 to $35 per square foot for materials and aluminum or vinyl at $10 to $30, but material is only part of the bill. Cedar costs more than treated pine and needs sealing in Colorado's dry sun; treated timber is cheaper and heavier.
Attached or freestanding
An attached pergola saves two posts but needs a ledger on solid framing, and in Fort Collins any attached pergola needs a permit. A freestanding one needs four or more posts and cross bracing.
On a deck
A pergola bearing on top of a deck needs engineered plans in Fort Collins, which adds the engineer's fee. Running the posts down to their own footings can avoid it.
Extras
Top slats for more shade, string-light hardware, a fan, privacy screens and, on louvered systems, motors, rain sensors and heaters. A solid roof turns a pergola into a patio cover, priced on the covered patio cost page.

Kit or built
A kit pergola is cheaper to buy and quicker to stand up, but the members are often light for a 16 or 20 foot span and the size is fixed. In Fort Collins an aluminum or composite kit that needs a permit also needs a stamped design, and the City's permit page says prefab pergolas must be designed and stamped by a Colorado-licensed structural engineer. A built wood pergola is sized to the space and can follow the City's standard details. See the Fort Collins pergola permit guide.
